Why is Space Exploration Technologies stock gaining today?

Space Exploration Technologies Corp stock rose 1.9% in pre-open trading today after a Washington Post report disclosed that SpaceX is in discussions with EchoStar to either purchase Boost Mobile or secure access to its wireless network, which Boost leases from AT&T and T-Mobile.

The potential deal would allow SpaceX to build a hybrid satellite-terrestrial mobile network under its Starlink Mobile brand, representing a direct challenge to the established U.S. wireless giants in a market estimated to be worth $235 billion.

Elon Musk personally met with EchoStar Chairman Charlie Ergen last month to advance the discussions, and SpaceX’s CFO had already flagged the company’s ambition to become a major mobile carrier on its most recent earnings call.

Adding to the positive tone, Musk spent the weekend on social media asserting that SpaceX’s capital spending efficiency is "greatly underestimated" and that its Colossus 2 AI computing complex — housing 220,000 Nvidia chips across two buildings — already leads rival facilities in raw computing power, helping the stock recover ground lost during Friday’s session.

The broader market is providing a supportive backdrop, with the S&P 500 up 0.5%, the Dow up 0.5%, and the Nasdaq up 0.8% in pre-market trading.

No major U.S. macro data has been released today, though investors are watching ISM Manufacturing PMI and JOLTS job openings due later in the session, with the more consequential October nonfarm payrolls report not scheduled until November 6.

Taken together, the combination of a high-profile strategic expansion report, Musk’s bullish weekend commentary on AI infrastructure, and a constructive broad-market environment are driving today’s pre-market rebound for SPCX, which at $137.22 remains well below its 52-week high of $225.64 but is recovering from the 8-month low it touched on Friday.
