Why is SK hynix stock rallying today?

SK hynix stock rose 2.4% in morning trading after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman made an unannounced visit to South Korea over the weekend, meeting with SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won and senior executives from SK Hynix and SK Telecom to advance cooperation on high-bandwidth memory and AI data center infrastructure under OpenAI’s Stargate initiative. The visit reinforced SK Hynix’s standing as an indispensable supplier in the global AI memory chain, with the company’s own head of HBM sales noting that customers are requesting more than twice the volume the company can supply.

Adding to the bullish momentum, Nomura Securities published a fresh report arguing that the memory market has been fundamentally mispriced, maintaining its positive view on SK Hynix; Rosenblatt separately reiterated a Buy rating, contending that the recent pullback driven by concerns over CXMT’s DDR5 RDIMM entry was an overreaction to a manageable competitive threat. Reports also emerged that SK Hynix is weighing a special dividend of roughly $12 billion funded by gains from its Kioxia stake, adding a near-term capital return catalyst on top of the company’s already-announced ~$75 billion shareholder return program.

The broader market provided a constructive backdrop, with the S&P 500 up 0.6%, the Nasdaq up 0.8%, and the Dow up 1.1% in morning trading as investors awaited the Federal Reserve’s rate decision — widely expected to be a hold — which reduced near-term rate uncertainty and lifted risk appetite across technology and semiconductor names. South Korea’s October chip export data, showing nearly a doubling year-over-year in the largest such surge in over 50 years, further validated the demand thesis underpinning the entire memory sector.

Taken together, the combination of a high-profile strategic endorsement from OpenAI’s leadership, renewed analyst conviction, a potential special dividend, and a supportive macro backdrop created a compelling multi-layered catalyst that pushed SK hynix shares toward a session high of $154.27, well above the prior close of $149.21, while still leaving the stock trading at a meaningful discount to its 52-week high of $199.87.
