Why is Shopify stock tumbling today?

Shares of Shopify fell 14.9% in pre-open trading after the company’s pre-market Q3 2026 earnings report revealed that two critical growth metrics — gross merchandise volume and subscription revenue — fell short of Wall Street’s expectations, overshadowing a headline earnings beat. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.49, above the $0.47 analyst estimate, and revenue grew 32% year-over-year to $3.74 billion, matching the consensus. However, GMV, the total value of goods sold through Shopify’s platform, rose about 30% to $119.15 billion, below the $120.08 billion estimate, and subscription revenue rose about 20% to $836 million, below the $850.2 million estimate.

The market’s reaction was amplified by the company’s forward outlook and its demanding valuation. For the fourth quarter, Shopify expects revenue to grow at a low-thirties percentage rate from a year earlier and gross profit dollars to grow at a high-twenties rate, with operating expenses expected at 29% to 30% of revenue. That guidance implied a continuation of decelerating growth from the 34% revenue expansion seen in Q2, and with the stock trading at roughly 87 times 2026 earnings, the valuation left little margin for error. Prior to today, KeyBanc had raised its price target on Shopify to $185 from $180 just the day before, maintaining an Overweight rating, underscoring how elevated expectations had become.

The macro backdrop offered no buffer. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.41% to 51,984 in the prior session, while the S&P 500 fell 0.51% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.07%. A series of large tech-sector moves — including Marvell Technology’s $115 billion acquisition bid and Oracle’s equity and debt issuance to fund AI infrastructure — had already pushed the Nasdaq-100 into technical correction territory, creating a fragile environment for high-multiple growth names heading into today’s open.

Taken together, the combination of a mixed earnings report — strong on the bottom line but soft on the volume and subscription metrics that underpin Shopify’s long-term growth story — collided with a stretched valuation and a weakened tech tape. Investors appear to be grading Shopify on more than whether it beats its own guidance, and with the stock still near its record highs, the market’s bar may well have been above management’s. The result is a sharp premarket re-rating as traders reassess whether the company’s premium can be sustained through the holiday quarter.
