Why is Novo Nordisk stock surging today?
Novo Nordisk stock surged 5.8% today after the Danish pharmaceutical giant delivered a third-quarter earnings beat and, crucially, raised its full-year 2026 guidance — the first time this year management has signalled that annual sales could actually grow versus 2025.
The company now expects adjusted sales and adjusted operating profit to move in a range of -2% to +2% at constant exchange rates, a marked improvement from the prior forecast of -6% to 0% for both measures.
Net sales for the quarter reached 79.2 billion Danish kroner, well ahead of analyst estimates, while adjusted operating profit climbed 27% at constant exchange rates to 31.72 billion kroner.
The standout driver within the results was the obesity care segment, where sales rose 22% at constant exchange rates to 26.15 billion kroner, fuelled by volume growth across the United States and international markets, including early commercial traction from the Wegovy pill launched in the U.S., UAE, UK, and Germany.
Reported operating profit did decline due to 8.7 billion kroner in non-cash impairment charges — including a 4.6 billion kroner write-down on ziltivekimab and 4.1 billion kroner tied to manufacturing network restructuring — but investors focused on the adjusted figures and the upgraded outlook.
The company also announced today that CFO Karsten Munk Knudsen would step down, with Luigi La Corte named as his successor, a transition that did not appear to weigh materially on sentiment.
The broader European market environment was actually a headwind today, with futures pointing lower amid concerns that a Democratic sweep of the U.S. Congress could bring tighter AI regulation, dampening sentiment across European tech-adjacent sectors.
The Danish OMX Copenhagen 20 had closed only marginally higher in the prior session, and Novo Nordisk’s heavyweight weighting in the index means its strong performance helped cushion the local market. In the GLP-1 competitive landscape, rival Eli Lilly had already raised its own forecasts the prior week, setting a high bar that Novo Nordisk’s results appeared to meet or exceed.
Taken together, the combination of a clear earnings beat, a guidance upgrade that for the first time this year allows for growth, and robust obesity drug momentum gave investors a compelling reason to re-rate the stock higher today, pushing it from a previous close of 270.2 kroner to a session high of 288 kroner, well above its 52-week low of 224.3 kroner, though still a significant distance from its 52-week peak of 410 kroner.
