Why is MercadoLibre stock plunging today?

Shares of MercadoLibre fell 10.8% in pre-open trading after Brazil’s presidential election delivered a result that caught financial markets off guard, with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva securing a historic fourth term by defeating first-round frontrunner Flávio Bolsonaro with roughly 51.8% of the vote.

Investors had been positioned for a Bolsonaro victory, anticipating tighter government spending, lower corporate taxes, and greater fiscal discipline; Lula’s win has instead raised concerns about Brazil’s public finances, interest rates, and currency, prompting investors to reconsider their exposure to the country’s assets.

Markets had shifted sharply in anticipation of a rightward turn in Brazilian politics since Bolsonaro unexpectedly won the first round three weeks ago, with Brazil’s Bovespa index closing Friday nearly 7% above where it stood heading into that vote and the real having strengthened almost 5% against the dollar.

Those gains are now reversing sharply. The damage extends well beyond MercadoLibre, with the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF crashing nearly 19% and fellow Latin American fintech giant Nu Holdings also plunging, reflecting widespread selling among investors exposed to the country’s financial markets. Adding to the uncertainty, Flávio Bolsonaro has refused to concede the result.

Lula’s economic team is targeting a primary budget surplus of about 1.3% of GDP by 2030, but public debt already exceeds 82% of GDP, and mandatory spending on pensions and other legally protected programs leaves limited room for cuts — a fiscal backdrop that keeps Brazilian interest rates elevated and pressures the real, both of which compress MercadoLibre’s dollar-reported earnings.

Meanwhile, U.S. equity benchmarks are trading modestly higher, underscoring that today’s MELI decline is driven entirely by country-specific political risk rather than any broad market weakness.

Despite the sharp premarket tumble, Wall Street remains broadly bullish on MercadoLibre’s long-term prospects; the stock commands a Strong Buy consensus backed by 9 Buy recommendations and 3 Holds, with an average 12-month price target of $2,291.82, implying meaningful upside from recent levels.

With the company’s Q3 2026 earnings release approaching in the coming days, investors will be watching closely for any commentary on how the shifting Brazilian political landscape may affect near-term guidance and the company’s ongoing investment cycle in logistics, credit, and artificial intelligence.
