Why is Johnson Controls stock surging today?
Johnson Controls International PLC stock surged 3.8% in pre-open trading after the company delivered a stronger-than-expected fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 earnings report before the market opened today.
Adjusted EPS rose 32% year-over-year to $1.66, topping the analyst consensus of $1.58, while net sales climbed 10% to $7.11 billion. Q4 orders jumped 44% organically year-over-year, and the company’s backlog reached $23.0 billion, up 43% organically.
CEO Joakim Weidemanis stated, "We finished fiscal 2026 with significant momentum, delivering more than 8% organic revenue growth, double-digit adjusted EPS growth and strong free cash flow conversion."
Adding to the bullish tone, the strong performance was driven by sustained demand for data centers and the company’s differentiated technology capabilities. For fiscal 2027, Johnson Controls expects organic sales growth of 11% to 12% for the full year and 12% to 14% for the first quarter.
The company also forecast FY27 adjusted EPS of $6.15 to $6.30 and adjusted free cash flow conversion of approximately 95%. Separately, Truelink Capital announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Johnson Controls’ global intrusion products business, with the transaction expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
On the analyst front, the stock entered today’s session with a constructive consensus. BofA analyst Andrew Obin had raised the firm’s price target on Johnson Controls to $175 from $152, keeping a Buy rating on the shares and citing upward consensus EPS revisions to both the upcoming quarter and FY27.
Morgan Stanley had also upped its target price to $180 and maintained an Overweight rating. The broader U.S. equity market provided a modestly supportive backdrop, with the S&P 500 up 0.3% and the Nasdaq gaining 0.4%, though JCI’s pre-market move far outpaced the indices.
The combination of a decisive earnings beat, a record and rapidly expanding backlog fueled by data center infrastructure demand, above-consensus FY2027 guidance, and a portfolio-simplifying divestiture of the intrusion products unit converged to drive today’s outsized pre-market rally.
Johnson Controls’ Q4 FY2026 adjusted EBIT margin widened 3 percentage points year-over-year to 18.3%, and its Solutions and Services backlog climbed 43% to $23 billion, reinforcing investor confidence in the company’s execution and long-term growth trajectory.
