Why is Intel stock rallying today?

Intel Corporation stock rallied 5.5% in afternoon trading after New Street Research analyst Pierre Ferragu upgraded the chipmaker to Buy from Neutral before the opening bell, assigning a $125 price target and arguing that the structural scarcity of server CPUs — fueled by the rapid expansion of agentic artificial intelligence — is set to persist for years, providing a durable tailwind for Intel’s data center business and broader turnaround.

The upgrade was not the only bullish voice on the Street today. KeyBanc maintained its Overweight rating with a $155 price target, projecting third-quarter revenue of $16.9 billion and earnings per share of $0.46, both above Wall Street’s consensus. RBC Capital also reiterated its coverage, expecting Intel to beat revenue estimates by at least 5% on robust AI demand and noting aggressive capacity additions across its Intel 3 and 18A process nodes. Adding to the constructive tone, CEO Lip-Bu Tan purchased roughly 105,000 shares worth approximately $10 million, a signal of insider confidence that traders noted.

The move unfolded against a supportive macro backdrop, with the Nasdaq Composite advancing 1.0% and the S&P 500 gaining 0.7% as the technology sector led all groups higher. Semiconductor shares broadly bounced back from the prior week’s selloff, with investors buying the dip across the chip complex ahead of a heavy earnings week — Intel’s own Q3 2026 results are due after the close on October 29, where consensus calls for revenue of approximately $16.5 billion and EPS of $0.40.

The combination of a high-profile analyst upgrade, supportive coverage from multiple other firms, meaningful insider buying, and a favorable sector-wide rebound created a powerful confluence of catalysts, lifting Intel well above its opening price of $87.78 and toward a session high of $92.09 — its strongest single-day performance in recent weeks.
