Why is Hut 8 stock sliding today?

Hut 8 Corp stock is sliding 11.2% to trade at C$60.50, extending a punishing multi-session decline rooted in a double blow: a Q3 2026 earnings miss and mounting political risk around the company’s flagship Texas data center campus.

Revenue for the quarter came in at $71.1 million, down 14.8% year-over-year and below Wall Street’s consensus estimate, while the adjusted loss per share came in wider than analysts had forecast — a combination that triggered an initial sharp sell-off in the prior session that has carried into today’s trading.

Amplifying the pressure, multiple Wall Street firms slashed their price targets on Hut 8 today. Needham cut its target from $138 to $101, Rosenblatt trimmed from $124 to $100, Cantor Fitzgerald reduced from $151 to $127, and Clear Street lowered from $170 to $165 — all on the same day, and all while maintaining buy-equivalent ratings. The common thread across these revisions was concern over Texas permitting risk: the election of a Democratic governor who campaigned on a moratorium on new data center construction has clouded the outlook for Hut 8’s 1,000 MW Beacon Point campus in Nueces County, with the outgoing administration having already frozen the permit process pending a December audit.

The broader market offered no shelter. The S&P 500 fell 3.2%, the Nasdaq dropped 4.9%, and the Dow slid 2.1% in a broad risk-off session, hitting high-beta technology and infrastructure names particularly hard. Sector peers were similarly punished, with Cipher Mining also suffering steep losses on the same Texas regulatory fears, underscoring that this is a group-wide repricing of AI data center development risk rather than a Hut 8-specific story alone.

Together, the earnings shortfall, the Texas political headwind, a wave of coordinated analyst target reductions, and a deeply negative macro backdrop have combined to push Hut 8 shares well off their session open of C$66.32, touching an intraday low of C$59.10 — a level that sits well below the stock’s 52-week high of C$194.28 but still above its 52-week low of C$44.82.
