Why is Gilead Sciences stock surging today?

Gilead Sciences stock surged 2.9% in after-hours trading to reach $170.40 after the company delivered a decisive Q3 2026 earnings beat.

The company reported an adjusted EPS of $2.55 against the analyst consensus of approximately $2.17 and revenue of $8.3 billion versus expectations of roughly $7.79 billion — a top-line beat of more than 6%.

Management simultaneously raised full-year 2026 product sales guidance to a range of $31.0 billion to $31.3 billion, with the midpoint of $31.15 billion coming in above the prior Wall Street consensus of approximately $30.77 billion. CEO Daniel O’Day described the results as Gilead’s "strongest year-over-year base business growth in more than a decade."

The standout driver within the quarter was the HIV franchise, which grew 18% year-over-year, with HIV prevention sales nearly doubling compared to the same period in 2025. Biktarvy, the company’s flagship HIV treatment, contributed $4.1 billion in sales, up 10% year-over-year, while the injectable PrEP drug Yeztugo continued its rapid commercial ramp. Adding to the positive backdrop, Jefferies had raised its price target on the stock to $185 ahead of the report, maintaining a Buy rating — a signal of pre-earnings institutional confidence that helped set the stage for the after-hours reaction.

The broader market provided a challenging backdrop on the day, with the S&P 500 slipping 0.6% and the Nasdaq declining 1.2%, reflecting macro-driven caution among investors. During the regular session, Gilead shares had already climbed to a new 52-week high of $165.70, suggesting the market was pricing in optimism ahead of the print — but the magnitude of the actual beat drove a further leg higher once results were released after the close.

Taken together, the combination of a substantial earnings and revenue surprise, a meaningful guidance raise, and accelerating HIV franchise momentum gave investors clear fundamental justification to push the stock well above its prior 52-week high in after-hours trading, even as the wider market struggled to find direction.
