Why is Fortinet stock plunging today?

Fortinet stock plunged -25.7% in pre-open trading today after the cybersecurity giant’s third-quarter 2026 earnings report, released after Wednesday’s closing bell, triggered a severe "sell the news" reaction despite beating analyst estimates on every headline metric.

The company posted non-GAAP EPS of $0.91 against a consensus of $0.86, while total revenue grew 20% year-over-year to $2.08 billion, edging past the $2.06 billion Wall Street had expected. However, investors focused on the deceleration in product revenue growth — which came in at 37% versus the roughly 50% the market had anticipated — and a cut to full-year service revenue guidance, lowered to a range of $5.15 billion to $5.17 billion from a prior outlook of $5.18 billion to $5.22 billion.

Adding to the pressure, BofA Securities downgraded Fortinet to Neutral from Buy and slashed its price target to $140 from $220, with analyst Tal Liani arguing that the Q2 product surge may have reflected demand pull-forward rather than durable acceleration.

Jefferies analyst Joseph Gallo also trimmed his price target to $145 from $190, maintaining a Hold rating, and flagged concerns that lower-than-expected service attach rates could weigh on growth durability into mid-2027. An unconfirmed cyber breach report that surfaced after the close added a reputational dimension to the selloff, cutting against the core investment thesis for a company whose business is built on protecting customers from such incidents.

Fortinet’s sharp decline rippled across the cybersecurity sector, with peers including Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike, and Zscaler all falling in sympathy, reflecting broader investor anxiety about elevated valuations and slowing growth across the space. The broader market provided little cushion, with the NASDAQ declining -1.1%, the S&P 500 slipping -0.3%, and the Dow Jones edging -0.2% lower.

Taken together, a "beat-and-cut" dynamic on service revenue guidance, a high-profile analyst downgrade, and a stock that had already rallied sharply into earnings created the conditions for an outsized reaction — with investors choosing to reset expectations rather than reward the headline beat, sending shares to $129.38 in pre-market trading.
