Why is Flotek Industries stock crashing today?

Flotek Industries stock dropped -22.3% in afternoon trading to reach $27.86 after short-seller Wolfpack Research announced a short position in the company, alleging that its pivotal 10-year, $400 million contract with PREPA and Power Expectations has been canceled following the discovery of an unauthorized signature that has since been referred for criminal investigation. The report struck at the heart of Flotek’s near-term revenue story, which had been significantly bolstered by the PREPA deal announced earlier this month.

Wolfpack’s report further contends that the alleged contract cancellation could eliminate roughly 57% of Flotek’s near-term backlog, a claim that raises serious questions about the company’s updated 2026 revenue guidance of $340–$350 million, which was issued alongside a strong Q2 earnings beat just two weeks ago. The broader scandal, according to the short seller, extends beyond the contract itself and implicates governance concerns that investors are now rapidly repricing into the stock.

The broader market offered no buffer for Flotek today, with the S&P 500 slipping -0.4%, the Dow Jones easing -0.5%, and the Nasdaq declining -0.3%, reflecting a generally cautious tone across U.S. equities. The selling in FTK was therefore almost entirely driven by the company-specific allegations rather than any sector-wide or macro headwind, though the energy services space broadly has faced uncertainty around activity levels and contract visibility.

The combination of a credible short-seller attack targeting Flotek’s most transformative contract, the potential erasure of more than half of its near-term backlog, and a criminal investigation referral proved overwhelming for a stock that had already surged sharply from its 52-week low of $10.95 to a high of $39.67. Today’s steep decline reflects investors rapidly reassessing the risk profile of a company whose growth narrative now faces significant legal and contractual uncertainty.
