Why is F5 stock gaining in after-hours trading today?
F5 stock rose 1.0% in after-hours trading today after the application security and delivery company reported fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 results that beat Wall Street’s expectations on both revenue and earnings, capping what management described as an exceptional fiscal year.
Total revenue for the quarter reached $917 million, up 13% year-over-year, with product revenue climbing to $510 million — driven by systems revenue growth of 29% and software revenue growth of 19%. Adjusted EPS of $4.42 came in 3.9% above the analyst consensus estimate.
Alongside the results, F5’s board authorized an additional $1.5 billion for share repurchases — incremental to the $322 million remaining under the existing program — and the company issued FY2027 guidance calling for revenue growth of 8% to 9% and non-GAAP EPS in the range of $18.00 to $18.30. The buyback expansion was seen as a meaningful signal of management’s confidence in the company’s cash generation capacity. However, shares initially slipped in the minutes immediately following the release, as investors noted that operating income grew only modestly year-over-year even as sales, marketing, and R&D spending climbed, with GAAP net income also declining for the quarter.
Operating margin contracted to 23.1% from 25.4% in the same quarter a year earlier, and free cash flow margin fell sharply quarter-over-quarter — factors that tempered enthusiasm and kept the after-hours gain modest. The broader market offered little directional support, with the S&P 500 essentially flat, the Nasdaq down a fraction, and the Dow Jones barely positive on the day, leaving the stock’s movement almost entirely driven by its own fundamental news.
Taken together, a clear earnings beat, accelerating product revenue across both hardware and software, and a substantial new buyback program were enough to keep F5 in positive territory after hours, even as investors weighed the margin headwinds and digested FY2027 guidance that pointed to continued — if slightly slower — growth. CEO François Locoh-Donou noted that nine consecutive quarters of double-digit product revenue growth reflect F5’s expanding strategic role as customers navigate hybrid multicloud complexity, an intensifying threat landscape, and a rapidly evolving AI-driven world.
