Why is Drax stock gaining today?

Drax stock is up 0.9% today, trading at 870.46p during the session, as the market continues to digest the transformative AI data centre partnership unveiled the previous day. The announcement — a tie-up with Brookfield Asset Management and its UK-based AI infrastructure platform Radiant to develop a data centre exceeding 1 gigawatt on the Drax Power Station estate in northern England — triggered a surge of more than 8% on Tuesday and is still driving buying interest today.

The partnership drew immediate positive commentary from JPMorgan analysts, who argued the deal could lift the valuation attributed to Drax’s data centre ambitions and bolster confidence that Drax Power Station will remain operational beyond the expiry of its biomass subsidy scheme in March 2031 — a concern that had long weighed on the shares. Citi took a more measured view, noting that no final investment decision had been reached and that limited financial detail had been disclosed, but even that cautious stance did not dampen overall sentiment. The deal’s first phase targets up to 100 megawatts of compute capacity, backed by an initial £2.5 billion commitment, with commercial operations targeted for early 2028.

On the broader market front, the FTSE 100 edged modestly higher today, supported by falling bond yields in the wake of Democratic gains in the US midterm elections, which investors interpreted as reducing the likelihood of further deficit-expanding fiscal policy. However, caution persisted ahead of Thursday’s Bank of England interest rate decision, with markets widely expecting a rate increase — the first since 2023 — that could weigh on rate-sensitive sectors. Against this mixed backdrop, Drax’s company-specific momentum allowed it to outperform the wider UK market.

Taken together, the combination of a genuinely transformative corporate announcement, constructive analyst commentary, and a modestly supportive macro backdrop has kept Drax shares well bid today. The stock remains below its 52-week high of 937.5p but has recovered substantially from its 52-week low of 702p, with the Brookfield partnership providing a credible new growth narrative centred on the UK’s rapidly expanding AI infrastructure needs.
