Why is DigitalOcean stock down today?
DigitalOcean stock slipped 2.0% in pre-open trading today after a paradoxical "sell the news" reaction to a Q3 2026 earnings report that handily beat Wall Street’s expectations on every key metric. The stock fell much more sharply at first before paring its losses.
The company posted adjusted EPS of $0.45, surpassing the $0.32 analyst consensus by $0.13, while revenue of $321 million grew 40% year-over-year and came in well above the $306.66 million estimate — marking the fifth consecutive quarter of accelerating revenue growth.
The company also raised its forward guidance meaningfully, projecting Q4 revenue of $348–$351 million versus the $333.4 million consensus, and full-year 2026 adjusted EPS of $1.60–$1.62 against a $1.45 estimate.
However, investors appeared unnerved by a GAAP net loss of $43 million — which included a $57 million induced conversion expense tied to the partial repurchase of its 2030 Convertible Notes — as well as surging stock-based compensation and the capital-intensive demands of scaling GPU infrastructure for AI workloads.
Significant insider net selling of approximately $573.8 million over the past twelve months added a further cautionary note, while UBS had recently trimmed its price target on the stock to $105 from $125, maintaining a Neutral rating on concerns about near-term profitability.
The broader market backdrop provided little relief in pre-market, with US midterm election uncertainty injecting risk aversion across growth names and the JOLTS job openings report due later in the session keeping investors cautious.
The stock had already shed roughly a third of its value over the prior month heading into today’s report, suggesting some investors had anticipated a stronger initial bounce than materialized.
Taken together, a high bar set by the stock’s AI-driven narrative, lingering concerns about the cost of scaling its cloud infrastructure, and a macro environment clouded by election-day uncertainty combined to overwhelm an otherwise strong fundamental print, leaving shares under pressure despite the beat-and-raise quarter.
