Why is Crown stock sliding after-hours today?

Crown Holdings Inc stock slid 5.1% in after-hours trading today after the metal packaging giant reported third-quarter results that beat estimates but issued fourth-quarter guidance that disappointed investors. The company posted adjusted earnings per share of $2.39 for Q3, topping the analyst consensus of $2.26, while revenue reached $3.71 billion against expectations of $3.45 billion — a 16% jump from the same quarter a year earlier. However, Q4 adjusted EPS guidance of $1.63 to $1.73, with a midpoint of $1.68, came in well below the analyst consensus of $1.79, which proved to be the decisive factor in the after-hours selloff.

Adding to the cautious tone, Wells Fargo maintained its "equal weight" rating on the stock today while trimming its price target slightly from $127 to $126. Insider activity has also leaned negative in recent months, with approximately $16.5 million in insider sales over the past year and no reported purchases, a dynamic that had already been flagged as a mixed signal heading into earnings. The full-year 2026 EPS guidance range of $8.35 to $8.45 was roughly in line with the consensus of $8.40, offering little incremental reassurance.

The broader market provided no meaningful buffer, with the S&P 500, Dow Jones, and Nasdaq each finishing the regular session essentially flat. Within the industrials and materials space, sentiment was already strained, as peer Steel Dynamics also fell sharply in after-hours after missing its own Q3 earnings estimates, underscoring sector-wide profitability pressures from elevated input costs and compressed margins.

Taken together, the combination of a below-consensus Q4 outlook, a modest analyst price target reduction, and a weak read-across from a sector peer proved too much for the stock to absorb, pushing CCK to $109 in after-hours trading — well off its day high of $115.35 and approaching the lower end of its recent trading range.
