Why is Credo Technology stock sliding today?

Credo Technology stock is sliding 10.3% in pre-open trading today after the company delivered fiscal first-quarter 2027 results the prior evening that beat headline estimates but disappointed on profitability metrics, with margin compression and elevated investor expectations combining to push sellers into control.

After Tuesday’s closing bell, Credo reported Q1 FY2027 revenue of $479 million, topping the analyst estimate of roughly $471.8 million, while adjusted earnings of $1.20 per share exceeded the $1.17 consensus, with revenue up 10% sequentially and 115% year-over-year.

However, GAAP gross margin fell to 64.5% from 68.2% in the prior quarter, and Q2 guidance implies a further step-down, which alarmed investors who had priced the stock for sustained margin expansion.

The stock fell despite the better-than-expected results, as shrinking margins, rising costs, and lofty investor expectations overshadowed the beats — and with shares having gained roughly 43.6% year-to-date through Tuesday’s close, the rally had left the stock vulnerable to profit-taking.

Looking ahead, Credo expects its ZeroFlap Optics, silicon photonics PICs, and optical DSPs to each contribute more than $100 million in fiscal 2027, targeting over $600 million in total optical revenue for the year, and projects full-year total revenue growth of more than 85% — yet the near-term margin trajectory proved more pressing for traders.

The broader market offered little buffer. The S&P 500 was essentially flat, the Dow edged fractionally higher, and the NASDAQ dipped slightly, providing no sector-wide lift to cushion the stock-specific selling.

Among the 19 analysts covering the stock, the average rating remains "Strong Buy" with a consensus 12-month price target of $283.23, suggesting the institutional community views the pullback as an overreaction to transitory margin pressure rather than a structural deterioration.

Taken together, a "sell the news" dynamic — fueled by margin contraction, elevated pre-earnings expectations, and a rich valuation multiple — drove today’s pre-market decline, even as the company’s long-term AI infrastructure growth story remained firmly intact. With full-year revenue growth guided above 85%, the fundamental trajectory is strong, but the market’s near-term focus on profitability trends proved sufficient to overwhelm an otherwise impressive quarterly print.
