Why is Coinbase stock sliding today?

Shares of Coinbase fell nearly 4.9% in morning trading to reach $156.43, pulled lower by a broad crypto-market selloff after Bitcoin tumbled approximately 8% from its monthly high to around $80,500, dragging the total crypto market capitalization down to roughly $2.7 trillion and pressuring high-beta crypto proxies like Coinbase more severely than the wider equity market.

Three forces converged to drive the Bitcoin weakness: escalating Middle East tensions that sent oil prices sharply higher, a large wave of Bitcoin ETF outflows — the biggest single-day redemption since June — and leveraged liquidations building ahead of the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision. On the analyst front, Bernstein SocGen kept its Outperform rating on Coinbase but cut its price target significantly to $250 from $330, signaling reduced confidence in the near-term crypto cycle, while JPMorgan moved in the opposite direction, raising its target to $189 from $148 with an Overweight rating — a mixed picture that provided little net support for the stock.

Adding to the pressure is pre-earnings positioning: Coinbase is scheduled to release its Q3 2026 results after market close on October 29, and consensus estimates point to revenue of approximately $1.20 billion — down around 36% year-over-year — alongside a small adjusted loss, raising the risk of another disappointment. The broader U.S. equity market was actually modestly higher on the day, with the S&P 500 gaining 0.4% and the Nasdaq edging up 0.3%, underscoring that Coinbase’s decline was entirely driven by crypto-sector dynamics rather than a general market downturn.

Taken together, the sharp Bitcoin correction, a meaningful analyst price target reduction, looming earnings risk, and macro uncertainty around the Fed’s forward guidance combined to push Coinbase stock well below its opening price of $160, leaving it trading closer to its 52-week low of $139.11 than its 52-week high of $373.25.
