Why is BW Energy stock sliding today?

BW Energy stock fell nearly 8.8% to trade at 60.3 NOK after the jack-up drilling rig Prospector 5, owned by Borr Drilling and contracted to drill on BW Energy’s Dussafu Marine licence offshore Gabon, sank on the evening of Saturday, October 24, during jacking operations ahead of a planned drilling campaign.

The accident left one worker dead and four people unaccounted for, triggering an immediate regulatory disclosure from BW Energy on Oslo Børs the following morning.

BW Energy, which holds a 73.5% working interest in the Dussafu licence, confirmed that production at the MaBoMo facility had been halted as part of standard drilling preparation procedures, and that no damage to the facility or harmful environmental discharges had been reported.

Nevertheless, the scale of the incident rattled investors: an analyst at Arctic Securities estimated the accident could reduce the underlying per-share value of BW Energy by approximately NOK 3. Licence partner Panoro Energy, which holds a 17.5% stake in Dussafu, also fell sharply in sympathy, underscoring how concentrated the market’s concern is around the Gabon asset.

The broader Norwegian market provided no offsetting support, having trended lower in recent sessions, while U.S. equity indices were only marginally positive on the day.

The timing of the incident is particularly sensitive, arriving just days before BW Energy’s Q3 2026 earnings release on October 29, a period when investors are already scrutinising the company’s production trajectory after Q3 output came in at approximately 21,500 barrels per day — below the lower end of full-year guidance.

Taken together, the combination of a serious operational safety event at BW Energy’s most important producing asset, analyst-quantified value erosion, a sympathetic sell-off across Dussafu licence partners, and pre-earnings caution created a powerful downward force on the stock today, pushing shares as low as 56.6 NOK intraday before recovering partially toward the 60.3 NOK level.
