Why is Bristol-Myers Squibb stock gaining today?

Bristol-Myers Squibb stock rose 1.5% in pre-open trading after the pharmaceutical giant delivered a decisive earnings beat ahead of the opening bell, with Q3 2026 adjusted EPS of $1.35 surpassing the Wall Street consensus of approximately $1.09–$1.10, and quarterly revenue of $13.07 billion clearing analyst forecasts of roughly $12.72 billion — a 7% year-over-year increase.

Management simultaneously raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to a range of $49.75 billion to $50.25 billion, up from the prior $49.0–$50.0 billion band, signaling confidence in the durability of its commercial momentum.

The engine behind the beat was the company’s Growth Portfolio, which expanded 12% year-over-year to reach $7.7 billion in the quarter, fueled by contributions from Opdivo Qvantig, Reblozyl, Breyanzi, Camzyos, and Opdualag.

CEO Christopher Boerner pointed to the FDA approval of Zenbexus — described as the first-in-class CELMoD agent for multiple myeloma — as a landmark pipeline milestone, with additional late-stage data readouts still ahead.

While full-year adjusted EPS guidance was trimmed to $6.35–$6.55 from $6.75–$7.00, the company was explicit that the entire reduction reflected a $0.60 per-share acquired IPRD charge tied to deal activity, not any deterioration in operating performance. A roughly $5 billion share repurchase authorization also remains available.

The broader market provided a headwind rather than a tailwind on the day, with major U.S. indices trading in negative territory in pre-market — the S&P 500 off 0.4%, the Dow Jones lower by 0.2%, and the Nasdaq declining 1.2% — making BMY’s pre-market advance a clear case of company-specific strength overriding macro pressure.

The stock had entered earnings day trading well below its 52-week high of $68.64, having faced mixed analyst sentiment in the weeks prior, including a Piper Sandler price-target reduction ahead of the print.

Taken together, the combination of a meaningful earnings surprise, a raised revenue outlook, continued Growth Portfolio momentum, and a compelling pipeline narrative was sufficient to lift BMY against a weak tape, as investors looked past the headline EPS guidance cut and focused on the underlying operational strength of the business.
