Why is Binance’s BNB crashing today?
BNB fell 8.1% to $698.01 on Friday as a suspected multibillion-dollar security breach at Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, sent the token sharply lower during today’s session.
On-chain data showed suspicious outflows beginning at approximately 20:24 UTC, with wallets identified as Binance hot wallets shedding billions of dollars in crypto assets — including Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Tron-based tokens — in roughly 40 minutes, in what analysts are calling potentially the largest exchange hack on record. Binance confirmed it was investigating a potential security incident and temporarily suspended withdrawals on multiple networks as a precautionary measure, while stating that user funds remain safe.
Blockchain data aggregator Glassnode said $5.3 billion in funds were affected by the hack.
Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle moved quickly to freeze a combined several billion dollars in USDT and USDC linked to the suspicious transfers, limiting the attacker’s ability to liquidate some holdings — though Bitcoin and Ether already moved to external wallets cannot be recalled. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao publicly acknowledged the situation "does look like a hack," a statement that intensified market anxiety and accelerated the sell-off. The broader crypto market declined sharply in sympathy, with Bitcoin, Ether, and other major altcoins all posting significant losses as investors rushed to reduce exposure to exchange-related risk.
The macro environment offered little support, with Bitcoin also selling off on the news of the hack. Any sales of compromised funds are likely to further pressure crypto markets.
