Why is Avio stock surging today?

Avio stock surged 5.3% to reach €32.25 as Berenberg upgraded its rating on the Italian aerospace and propulsion group from Hold to Buy, simultaneously raising its price target from €33 to €39 — implying roughly 27% upside from the prior session’s close.

The broker argued that the shortage of solid-propellant rocket motors is structural in nature and has been further aggravated by ongoing geopolitical conflicts, making Avio’s position as an independent, large-scale SRM supplier increasingly valuable to major defense prime contractors.

The upgrade also came with a sharp revision to long-term estimates: Berenberg now sees Avio’s 2030 revenues running approximately 19% above analyst consensus and adjusted EBITDA roughly 49% above consensus.

This bullish reassessment was underpinned by a series of recent corporate catalysts, including the October 13 strategic cooperation agreement with Lockheed Martin for solid rocket motor production — covering programs such as the Extended Range GMLRS and the Precision Strike Missile — as well as a management update earlier in the week that gave analysts improved visibility into both the defense and space segments.

Avio’s active share buyback program, covering up to 500,648 shares with a potential outlay of approximately €15 million, also continues to provide a supportive capital-allocation signal.

On the broader market front, the FTSE MIB opened around 0.3% higher on today’s session, with European bourses broadly in positive territory. Avio was flagged by Italian financial media as one of the standout performers at Piazza Affari from the opening bell, with banking stocks also recovering and Stellantis drawing attention.

The constructive macro backdrop — a week dominated by central bank focus — helped amplify investor receptiveness to the Berenberg note.

Taken together, a timely and conviction-driven analyst upgrade, layered on top of a string of high-profile corporate developments and a supportive market environment, provided the combination of catalysts needed to push Avio shares to their highest level in several weeks, with the stock trading well above its 52-week low of €23.30 and reclaiming ground toward the upper end of its recent trading range.
