Why is Aptevo Therapeutics stock slumping today?

Aptevo Therapeutics stock is sliding 17.3% in pre-open trading to reach $2.15, even as the company disclosed encouraging Phase 1b/2 trial results showing a 93% clinical benefit rate with its mipletamig triplet therapy in evaluable frontline acute myeloid leukemia patients carrying TP53 mutations — one of the most treatment-resistant forms of the disease.

Of the 14 evaluable patients in this subset, 11 achieved complete remission or complete remission with incomplete hematologic recovery, representing a 79% remission rate that substantially exceeded a published historical benchmark of 41%.

Despite the clinical progress, the stock’s sharp pre-market decline reflects a "sell the news" dynamic that is common in small, heavily traded biotech names.

A significant dilution overhang is also dampening sentiment: the company’s August 2026 warrant inducement and PIPE financing created the potential for more than 6.4 million new shares to enter the market through a resale registration statement — a figure that dwarfs the roughly 1.8 million shares of common stock that were outstanding as of late August, representing substantial pressure on existing shareholders.

The broader U.S. equity market is providing no meaningful support, with the S&P 500 edging up 0.3%, the Dow Jones gaining 0.6%, and the Nasdaq adding just 0.1% — a mildly constructive but insufficient backdrop to offset APVO’s company-specific headwinds.

Technical signals have also been persistently bearish, with the stock having shed the vast majority of its value from a 52-week high of $48.78 and hovering just above its 52-week low of $2.30.

In sum, today’s pre-market drop reflects a convergence of factors: a positive but arguably anticipated clinical readout failing to excite new buyers, a heavy dilution overhang from recent financing activity, and a deeply negative longer-term technical trend — all combining to push the stock toward the lower end of its recent trading range despite the scientifically meaningful mipletamig data.
