Why is Airbnb stock surging today?

Airbnb stock surged 11.4% in pre-open trading today to reach $189.50 after the home-sharing platform delivered a decisive third-quarter earnings beat following Thursday’s market close, triggering one of the stock’s largest single-session moves in recent memory.

The company posted diluted earnings per share of $3.16, clearing the Wall Street consensus of $2.85 by roughly 11%, while revenue climbed 19% year-over-year to $4.87 billion, topping the $4.75 billion estimate and marking the fastest top-line growth in more than three years.

Reinforcing the earnings beat, Airbnb’s board authorized a new $12 billion share repurchase program — a signal of substantial financial confidence given the company held $12.6 billion in cash, equivalents, and short-term investments as of September 30.

Management simultaneously raised its full-year 2026 revenue growth forecast to the "high teens" from a prior "at least mid-teens" outlook, and guided fourth-quarter revenue to a range of $3.22 billion to $3.28 billion, comfortably above the Street’s $3.16 billion estimate.

Operational metrics were equally impressive: gross booking value rose 21% year-over-year to $27.7 billion, nights and experiences booked accelerated to 155 million (up 16% year-over-year), and adjusted EBITDA reached $2.51 billion at a 52% margin, beating consensus by more than 6%.

CEO Brian Chesky stated in the shareholder letter, "Airbnb is back in growth mode," adding that the company’s reacceleration spanned all of its most established markets. Looking further ahead, plans to launch an AI Travel Agent in the first half of 2027 added a forward-looking growth dimension that resonated with investors.

The broader market provided a supportive backdrop for the move. The NASDAQ gained 1.5% and the S&P 500 added 0.4%, reflecting a tech-friendly session that helped amplify the stock’s earnings-driven repricing.

The Dow Jones, by contrast, slipped 0.7%, underscoring a rotation toward growth and technology names — a favorable environment for a high-multiple platform like Airbnb heading into the open.

Taken together, the combination of a rare top-and-bottom-line acceleration, a transformative capital return announcement, and upward guidance revisions created a powerful, multi-layered catalyst. With the stock trading at $189.50 and approaching its 52-week high of $193.45, investors are clearly repricing Airbnb’s earnings trajectory and renewed growth narrative heading into the final quarter of 2026.
