Why is Advantest stock surging today?

Advantest stock surged 5.3% to ¥36,770 on Thursday after the Japanese semiconductor testing equipment giant delivered a landmark earnings report fueled by robust artificial intelligence demand.

Advantest said late-Wednesday that second-quarter fiscal 2026 sales jumped 81.7% year-on-year to ¥477.7 billion, while operating profit of ¥266.8 billion came in roughly 21% ahead of market expectations of approximately ¥220 billion.

The company simultaneously raised its full-year revenue forecast to ¥1.863 trillion from ¥1.714 trillion and lifted its operating profit outlook to ¥967 billion from ¥846 billion, citing robust and broadening AI-related demand. Management stated that, barring geopolitical risks and macroeconomic disruptions, the industry is expected to remain supply-constrained with end-customer demand continuing to exceed supply through calendar year 2027.

Beyond the headline numbers, several supporting factors amplified the rally. Advantest announced a share buyback program alongside the results, and management revealed that CPU testing has emerged as a meaningful third growth engine alongside GPUs and custom ASICs, driven by agentic AI server deployments that the market had not fully anticipated.

The company also accelerated its SoC tester capacity expansion target to 10,000 units, with internal discussions reportedly underway about a potential doubling of that target, signaling long-term confidence in the demand cycle. The full-year operating margin forecast was raised to 51.9%, approximately three percentage points above the July outlook, with second-half margins expected to exceed 50%.

On the broader market front, the Nikkei 225 edged up 177 points to 64,131.28 today, a modest gain that belied Advantest’s outsized contribution — the stock alone accounted for roughly 408 points of index support.
