U.S. stocks mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 1.02%
U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Financials and Utilities sectors led shares higher while losses in the Technology, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.02% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.29%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.02%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 5.78% or 9.36 points to trade at 171.37 at the close. Meanwhile, Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) added 3.29% or 14.00 points to end at 438.94 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 3.25% or 4.67 points to 148.30 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which fell 0.99% or 3.39 points to trade at 339.55 at the close. Walmart Inc (NASDAQ:WMT) declined 0.72% or 0.85 points to end at 117.85 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was down 0.50% or 0.95 points to 190.47.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Equifax Inc (NYSE:EFX) which rose 11.33% to 176.54, Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) which was up 11.20% to settle at 109.52 and Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which gained 6.74% to close at 242.19.
The worst performers were General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) which was down 6.84% to 77.09 in late trade, DaVita Inc (NYSE:DVA) which lost 6.23% to settle at 175.35 and Genuine Parts Co (NYSE:GPC) which was down 5.12% to 123.52 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were WISeSat.Space Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:SAIQ) which rose 100.59% to 6.84, Peraso Inc (NASDAQ:PRSO) which was up 54.13% to settle at 0.59 and Alpha Technology Group Ltd (NASDAQ:ATGL) which gained 52.64% to close at 6.93.
The worst performers were Callan JMB Inc (NASDAQ:CJMB) which was down 65.63% to 0.66 in late trade, China SXT Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SXTC) which lost 41.28% to settle at 0.07 and Freightcar America Inc (NASDAQ:RAIL) which was down 31.37% to 4.02 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1844 to 854 and 94 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2227 rose and 1129 declined, while 215 ended unchanged.
Shares in Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) rose to 5-year highs; gaining 11.20% or 11.03 to 109.52. Shares in Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) rose to 3-years highs; up 6.74% or 15.30 to 242.19. Shares in Callan JMB Inc (NASDAQ:CJMB) fell to all time lows; losing 65.63% or 1.26 to 0.66. Shares in Freightcar America Inc (NASDAQ:RAIL) fell to 52-week lows; losing 31.37% or 1.84 to 4.02.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 6.13% to 17.31.
Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.06% or 2.48 to $4,140.12 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.16% or 0.16 to hit $97.98 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.12% or 0.13 to trade at $108.92 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.22% to 1.12, while USD/JPY fell 0.19% to 158.18.
The US Dollar Index Futures was unchanged 0.00% at 101.53.
