UBS starts medtech coverage, favors Intuitive Surgical and Enovis
UBS initiated coverage on four U.S. medical technology companies on Monday, taking a bullish stance on robotic surgery specialist Intuitive Surgical and orthopedic products maker Enovis, while adopting a more cautious outlook on sleep apnea device manufacturer Inspire Medical Systems and a neutral view on Integra LifeSciences.
The brokerage said the sector offers a mix of opportunities tied to innovation, procedure growth and operational recovery, but warned that not all companies are equally positioned to capitalize on those trends. UBS assigned Buy ratings to Intuitive Surgical and Enovis, a Sell rating to Inspire Medical and a Neutral rating to Integra LifeSciences.
Among the group, UBS was most positive on Intuitive Surgical, initiating coverage with a $500 price target and arguing that investors have become overly concerned about automation risks, hospital capital spending and market saturation. Instead, the firm believes automation could accelerate adoption of robotic-assisted surgery by reducing procedure times and costs, potentially adding hundreds of thousands of additional procedures over time. UBS also highlighted growth opportunities in cardiac surgery, endoluminal procedures and the company's ION platform, forecasting a five-year revenue compound annual growth rate of about 15%.
UBS also initiated coverage of Enovis with a Buy rating and a $51 price target, citing improving fundamentals following the integration of LimaCorporate. The brokerage expects integration-related headwinds to fade as management shifts its focus toward organic growth, supported by new product launches, cross-selling opportunities and expansion in reconstructive orthopedics. UBS said the company's ARVIS augmented reality surgical guidance platform could emerge as a meaningful growth driver as healthcare providers increasingly seek lower-cost alternatives to robotic systems.
On the other end of the spectrum, UBS initiated coverage of Inspire Medical with a Sell rating and a $39 price target, arguing that the company's growth slowdown reflects deeper structural challenges. The brokerage pointed to intensifying competition from new entrants, reimbursement uncertainty and slower-than-expected adoption of hypoglossal nerve stimulation therapy for obstructive sleep apnea. UBS believes consensus forecasts are too optimistic about a rebound in sales growth over the next several years.
Meanwhile, UBS initiated coverage of Integra LifeSciences with a Neutral rating and a $19 price target, saying the company's leadership positions in neurosurgery and wound care, combined with improving operational execution and easing inventory-related cash flow pressures, support a stable outlook. However, the brokerage believes the shares already reflect a reasonable growth trajectory and sees limited near-term catalysts to drive a significant re-rating.
The differing recommendations underscore UBS's preference for companies with visible innovation-driven growth and expanding addressable markets, while remaining cautious on businesses facing reimbursement pressures, competitive threats or limited upside relative to current valuations.
