Jeff Bezos’ Heartfelt Tribute to Dolly Parton Drew Brutal Backlash: ‘Nobody Wanted to Hear This From You’ — He Once Gave Her $100 Million for Charity

Jeff Bezos offered Dolly Parton a heartfelt farewell. The internet, apparently, wanted a receipt.

After Parton died on Tuesday, Aug. 25 at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer, Amazon (AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos posted a photo of himself with the country music legend and praised the generosity that defined her life. The tribute was quickly buried beneath comments accusing Bezos of missing the point of Parton’s legacy.

Parton’s representatives confirmed that she died at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, Tennessee after a brief cancer battle. They did not disclose the type of cancer. Her nephew Bryan Seaver announced her death in a prerecorded video. 

On Instagram, Bezos posted a photo of himself with Parton and wrote that she “spent her whole life showing us what it means to lead with love.” He said that he and Lauren Sánchez Bezos were grateful to have known her and praised her music, generosity, and joy.

That might have been the end of it. Instead, the comment section went to work.

‘Nobody Wanted to Hear This From You’

Critics didn’t dispute Parton’s generosity. They questioned Bezos’ decision to invoke it.

One commenter wrote, “Nobody needed or wanted to hear this from you.”

Another wrote, “Dolly was everything you are not” along with a heart emoji. 

Others accused Bezos of representing the opposite of what Parton stood for. Some told him to “be more Dolly,” while others urged him to donate to the Imagination Library. Another commenter joked that Parton appeared to be telling Bezos to give to charity in the photo.

The backlash has been documented by RadarOnline, which highlighted several of the critical responses beneath Bezos’ post. 

But there’s a rather important detail missing from the pile-on.

Bezos Once Gave Parton $100 Million

In November 2022, Bezos and Sánchez Bezos awarded Parton the $100 million Courage and Civility Award.

The money wasn’t a personal gift for Parton to spend however she pleased. The award was intended for charitable giving, with Parton able to direct the money to philanthropic organizations of her choosing. 

Parton appeared stunned when she learned the amount.

“When people are in a position to help, you should help,” she said while accepting the award, adding, “I've always said, 'I try to put my money where my heart is,'”

Bezos had already used the award to make Parton the third recipient of a nine-figure charitable grant, following José Andrés and Van Jones, who each received $100 million in 2021.

That doesn’t settle the argument over Bezos’ philanthropy. It does make one version of the backlash incomplete: The man praising Parton’s generosity had, in fact, put $100 million behind it.

Parton Made Giving Personal

Parton’s philanthropic reputation rests on more than big checks.

She launched the Imagination Library in 1995 in Sevier County, Tennessee, inspired in part by her father’s inability to read. The program now sends more than 3 million free books each month and had distributed more than 300 million books by June. 

Parton also donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University for Covid-19 research, funding that became associated with early work that helped Moderna's (MRNA) vaccine effort. 

Her giving reached disaster victims, children’s hospitals, scholarships, and local communities. After Hurricane Helene hit East Tennessee in 2024, Parton and her businesses and foundation committed $2 million to relief efforts. 

That’s why the Bezos tribute struck a nerve. Parton didn’t simply talk about generosity. She repeatedly attached money to people and causes that were easy to see and understand.

The Bezos Comparison

Bezos is operating on a radically different financial scale.

Forbes puts his current fortune at about $273 billion. The Bezos Earth Fund has a $10 billion commitment for climate-related work, while Forbes estimates Bezos and Sánchez Bezos have given about $4.7 billion over their lifetimes. 

Bezos also said in 2022 that he planned to give away the majority of his wealth during his lifetime, although he did not specify how much, when, or through which organizations. 

Then there’s MacKenzie Scott, Bezos’ former wife. Scott received roughly 4% of Amazon in their 2019 divorce settlement. She has since given away more than $26 billion, including more than $7 billion in donations announced during 2025.

That comparison helps explain the reaction beneath Bezos’ tribute, but it doesn’t erase the $100 million award to Parton.

Bezos wasn’t simply a billionaire posting about a philanthropist he admired. Four years before her death, he handed Parton $100 million specifically so she could put it toward causes she believed in.

The internet can still decide it didn’t want to hear from him. But the historical record is a little more complicated than the comment section suggests.
