GlobalFoundries options surge on $21B U.S.-Japan chip deal
GlobalFoundries Inc (GFS) options traded heavily on bullish positioning. About 90% of the 18,924 contracts were calls (16,962 calls against 1,962 puts, a call-to-put ratio of roughly 8.6:1).
GlobalFoundries Inc (GFS): Trading at $48.66 (+4.19%) as of Oct 14, 2:30 PM EDT || Day range $47.28–$49.80 || 52-week range $32.02–$92.55 || 3-month performance -23.11%
The Catalyst
The trigger was news early on Oct 14. GlobalFoundries was named technology provider and operator for two new fabs in Malta, New York, under a U.S.-Japan initiative of up to $21B. Japan supplies the capital, and GFS earns fees and licensing revenue. The first fab is expected online in 2029.
The Commerce Department also reallocated $955M of its existing CHIPS award toward photonics, silicon-germanium and packaging. In return it will take a stake of about 4%. Apple and General Motors are among the named customers. (Oct 14, 2026)
Reading the Strikes
- Oct 16 $50 and $55 calls: 4,822 and 3,267 contracts traded, against open interest of 7,391 and 8,046. These expire in two days and sit above the $48.76 spot price. Heavy volume there looks like short-dated upside speculation. It could also be closing of existing positions, because the data doesn’t say which side was initiated.
- Jan 15, 2027 $70 and Mar 19, 2027 $60 calls: the $60 volume of 1,966 is about 6x its open interest of 320, so it is largely new positioning. These are longer-dated bets on a rerating well above the current price.
- Nov 20 $50 calls: 588 contracts. They expire after the Q3 earnings date of Nov 4 (pre-market, consensus EPS $0.51), so they also carry an earnings bet. (Oct 8, 2026)
Volatility Signals
- 3-month implied volatility rose 3.89 points to 60.70%. Buyers are paying up for options.
- 90/110 skew rose 0.69 points to -1.17 points. It is still slightly negative, but downside protection is getting less of a premium relative to upside. The market is not pricing a big fear of a drop.
Bull vs. Bear
- Bull case: The deal adds a multi-year capacity pipeline with government backing and named anchor customers. The stock is still far below its 52-week high of $92.55.
- Bear case: The fabs don’t come online until 2029. The Commerce stake of about 4% adds dilution. Earlier in October, BNP Paribas Exane downgraded the stock to Neutral because the growth plans are gradual. Implied volatility of 60.70% also means the options are expensive.
Options flow shows positioning, not certainty. The stock gave up an early 5.2% gain on Oct 8, so intraday pops can fade.
