Binance CFO exits days after catastrophic $6 billion crypto hack
Binance Holdings Ltd. Chief Financial Officer Kaiser Ng is stepping down from the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange just days after hackers orchestrated a massive $6 billion cyber heist against the platform.
Justin Yek has been appointed as the firm’s new CFO, taking the financial helm as the exchange navigates the fallout from one of the most severe security breaches in the history of digital assets.
Despite the timing of the announcement, Binance framed the executive departure as a long-planned transition rather than a direct consequence of the catastrophic hack.
“Kaiser Ng has decided to pursue a new venture after more than five years at Binance, with a transition plan implemented over the last half year,” Binance co-Chief Executive Officer Yi He said in a statement. “We wish him the best in his next chapter.”
A historic breach
The leadership change lands in the immediate aftermath of a historic compromise of the exchange’s security infrastructure. Hackers successfully drained more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance, an unprecedented sum that threatens to heavily impact the company’s balance sheet and user trust.
The breach marks a severe setback for an exchange that has spent the past several years overhauling its compliance, security, and custody protocols to appease global regulators and court institutional investors.
As the newly appointed CFO, Yek faces the immediate challenge of managing the financial stability of the exchange following the multi-billion-dollar extraction. The breach is expected to draw intense scrutiny from international regulatory bodies, who have already maintained a tight leash on Binance following its multi-billion-dollar settlement with U.S. authorities over anti-money laundering violations in late 2023.
The loss dwarfs previous landmark crypto hacks - such as the $625 million Ronin Network exploit in 2022 and the $530 million Coincheck hack in 2018 - raising urgent questions regarding the systemic vulnerabilities of centralized cryptocurrency exchanges.
