UK-U.S. relations strained as Trump shifts stance on Russia-Ukraine war
Investing.com -- British Prime Minister Andy Burnham faces mounting diplomatic challenges as U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest moves on Russia threaten to deepen tensions between the two allies.
Burnham, who took office three months ago, had sought to prioritise domestic issues, including immigration and the cost of living, but Trump’s approach to the Russia-Ukraine war has forced foreign policy onto his agenda.
The U.S. president recently struck a diesel agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin and pressured Ukraine to halt drone attacks on Russian oil refineries, raising concerns about Washington’s commitment to European security.
Burnham hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in London this week, pledging to help restore relations between Kyiv and Washington.
However, British officials privately expressed concerns that Trump’s position on Ukraine has weakened the longstanding security partnership between the UK and U.S.
The tensions follow a difficult first meeting between Burnham and Trump in New York last month, when the U.S. president reportedly criticised Britain’s reluctance to support his military campaign against Iran.
Despite these differences, Burnham’s government has maintained a strategy of quiet diplomacy to preserve U.S. military and intelligence cooperation.
The White House defended Trump’s approach, arguing that his administration was working to end the conflict while encouraging European allies to assume greater responsibility for defence.
Meanwhile, Ukraine temporarily lost full access to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite communications system this week, although British officials indicated that service had subsequently been restored.
Britain has also committed additional Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine, allowing Kyiv to continue targeting military installations inside Russia.
Officials remain concerned about delays in securing additional air defence capabilities for Ukraine and limited progress among European allies supporting Kyiv.
The diplomatic challenges could carry domestic political consequences for Burnham, whose government faces pressure to demonstrate effective international leadership.
Uncertainty surrounding transatlantic relations and the Ukraine conflict also remains relevant to European defence spending and energy security.
